THE YELLOW BOX

Competition Proposal

A collaborative project to create a Winter Stations Toronto installation in response to their 2021 theme "Refuge."

The yellow kinetic box is constructed from a rectangular wood frame, coated with translucent yellow acrylic, and anchored to the existing lifeguard tower.

Each side has openings with at least three different height levels - for adults, kids, and dogs – in order for those outside to comfortably look inside, and vice versa. These openings have rings hanging from nylon threads that spin with the wind. As the rings spin, an array of colours can be seen inside of the box, produced by the light reflected from the aluminized face of recycled CD-ROMs suspended from the ceiling.

The concept of this object is based on contrast and the duality of perception: the vibrant yellow box is a symbol of summer warmth in contrast with the white snow in the winter; the monochromatic yellow outside is perceived in contrast with the colourful lights reflected from the CD-ROMs.

Unfortunately the Winterstations Competition was cancelled that year due to COVID.
